Living and working on a farm is not for everyone.
It is commonly believed that farming runs in one’s blood- you either love it, or you don’t. Farming is not just an occupation or a job. It is a lifestyle. A 24-hour, 7 days a week, 365 days a year lifestyle. It will take over your working hours, it will work its way into your conversations at all family events- dinner, lunch, reunions, and even holidays. It will wake you up in the middle of the night for calving checks or call you from bed earlier than most.
For some people, this would seem like a nightmare- never to leave your work behind and to always be thinking about it and talking about it.
For us, it is fulfilling.
It is in our blood. It is a part of us. Without the cows and the farm, we would be lost. They take care of us and give to us as much as we take care of and look after them. The cows are a blessing. They allow us to stay in tune with God’s earth and to watch as life’s everyday miracles unfold.
It is an amazing thing to watch and be constantly reminded that as life begins and ends around us that we are in tune with the natural cycles of the season as God intended for us to be. We see the earth sleep in the cold darkness of winter, and we are reminded to move slowly and carefully to take care of ourselves during this time.
In the spring, as things awaken with the sunlight and warmth of the new season, we are called to work longer days: there are fences to be fixed, hedges to trim, and more work to do.
In the summer, we are told to maintain the farm and to enjoy the summer evenings as we watch the cows graze on the hill and dip into the pond in the hot evening hours. Our work and our lives are a reflection of the seasons that rule our earth.
With the birth of every calf, we are reminded how beautiful and fragile life is. When a calf is born dead, it can be a hard thing to witness, and when they are born healthy and happy and ready to eat is a wonderful and joyous thing.
We know that discipline and hard work will be rewarded as we’ve watched year after year as the lord provides for us and helps us to provide for our community.
Since transitioning into the raw milk business in 2007, we have received such amazing feedback and overwhelming support from the community. It is not only an honor for us to provide products to such good people, but it reminds us every day to appreciate what we have and what we can give.
It is such a blessing, I pray that God continue protecting you and your family and the work that you are doing for his glory in Jesus name, Amen
